Week 21 Five Months

E aconteceu que....

i! Tudo bem?!

Well...lets see, how should I start this? It was a pretty good week! On Tuesday we had district meeting and the elders set up a treasure hunt. So we had to follow a map. It was fun, except for the fact that we had to go down a slide ha ha. Skirts and slides dont mix very well :)

We did exchanges this week and I got to leave my area and go with a sister training leader to her area. It was a lot of fun and I learned so much from her. I asked her one thing that she has learned on her mission and she said that when things get hard, when you get discouraged to remember the good things that have happened. I thought that was pretty good advice and I will definitely have to apply that.

We did a church tour with a non member yesterday. A less active young man in our ward texted us a few days ago and asked if we could take his friend on a tour. Its kind of cool because the young man is starting to come back to church, and he even told us that being able to tell this girl about the gospel and bear his testimony has helped him a lot. So the actual tour did not go all that great. We had prepared but it just didn't run very smoothly. But when we asked her how she felt at the end she said she felt amazing and that she couldn't explain how she felt. I was praying the whole time that she would feel the spirit and its amazing that when you invite the spirit to be with you that it will be there and will help you more than you imagined was possible. The spirit is definitely the teacher and not me. She wants to know more which is awesome! She might not live in our area which is kind of sad but I am just happy that we at least got to teach her a little bit.

By the way the title is "and it came to pass that..." That is one of the phrases I can recognize when I'm trying to study Portuguese. Well hopefully everyone is doing well! Have a great week and keep on smiling :)

Week 20

Yellow peaches and green flyers

Hello everyone!

Well this week was pretty good. We did quite a bit I think.

On Tuesday we did something I've never done before...canned peaches! We have been teaching the lessons to an older couple in our ward just for some practice and we got to their house on Tuesday and they were like- your right on time to help can peaches! So that was fun!

Sister Harris and I were also a little bit sneaky this week. You see we were at the church building and a member of our ward came in and started printing off the programs for Sunday, so we started helping fold them, then we notice that we are suppose to put a green flyer in them about the stake day of service coming up. Well it just so happens that the bottom of the flyer says- "a great opportunity to invite your friends of another faith." Hmmmmm...what would we as missionaries looking for people to teach do to make sure everyone sees this?...highlight it! Ha ha, so yes we highlighted over a hundred flyers (we cover 2 wards, lots of programs). We are just trying to spread the word :)

We also found a new investigator while tracting this week. We had an appointment with a less active couple and they were running late, so we tracted a few more houses on their street and we met a guy named Martin Lotz. He has tons of Mormon friends and we have seen him twice now. It was really awesome because he asked us about church before we even had the chance to invite him to come! I love it when that happens! Hopefully things will keep going well with him.

I know this is getting long so last comment...I forgot my name tag a few days ago when we left the house. You know your a missionary,  when you forget your name tag and you feel kind of lost ha ha. Well I hope everyone has a great day! Keep on smiling :)

And the Rain came down...

Oi!

Tudo bem?! So this week was interesting, lots of ups and downs.

One up was we had a baptism in our ward. It was a weird situation because the girl who got baptized lived in the elders area so we taught some of the lessons and the elders taught some of the lessons. We tried to get her to go to the right ward but her fellow shipping family was completely against that. So she got baptized in our ward, which was great.I don't know her very well but I am so happy for her! But then last night we got a call from the elders saying the fellow shipping family wants them to teach the new member lessons. So that was frustrating because we were suppose to teach those lessons, that was a down. For some reason the fellow shipping family doesn't like us and hasn't for a while, we don't know what we did wrong. But I know the elders will do a great job teaching her.

Another up was that it rained yesterday! I had been kind of missing the thunder storms we get at home during the summer and then yesterday we were having dinner with some members and this huge thunder storm rolled in and the rain came pouring down...it was awesome ha ha!

Sister Harris was sick for a couple of days this week and so I had a lot more time to study. I found a quote from the August Ensign that I really like by President Thomas S. Monson- "So much in life depends on our attitude. The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference. To do the best we can and then choose to be happy about our circumstances, whatever they may be, can bring peace and contentment." I loved that and its made me really think that we choose to be happy. Sure sometimes things happen that aren't fair but we cant let those things get us down, we have to keep going. Being happy is so much better than being miserable.

Week 18

TOWEL!

 

Ola everyone!

This week was kind of crazy. We had transfers and I am staying here in Kennewick. My new companions name is Sister Harris. She actually left the mtc the day before I went in so we've been out for almost the same amount of time. So we are just trying to figure everything out together :)

The best part of my week, and the most stressful part was that Riley got baptized on Saturday! I didn't know how much work goes into planning and preparing for a baptism, but everything went smoothly...except for the fact that we completely forgot to tell Riley to bring a towel ha ha oops. Luckily someone who lived close by ran and got him one. I was praying so much that everything would go well and Heavenly Father definitely answered my prayers because everything went a lot better then I imagined it would. I am so grateful that I had the chance to help teach Riley. He is a great young man and I know he is going to do great things.

I think one thing I have to learn over and over is how important prayer is. I know that Heavenly Father is always listening and I am so grateful He is and for all the help He gives me. I hope everyone has a great week! Keep on smiling :)

Week 17

Ola!

 So in case you want an update on my allergic reaction, I am completely better now. I have to carry a epypen everywhere I go, but hopefully I will never have to use it.

 Some good news this week is that we are hopefully going to have a baptism this Saturday! Its a little bit of a strange and difficult situation though because Riley (the young man getting baptized) doesn't live in our ward or stake boundaries, so we have to get a lot of permission to get him baptized in our ward. He has been going to our ward for 8 months and is very comfortable in our ward. We had him try out the ward he is supposed to go to but he didn't feel comfortable there, so hopefully we can get everything worked out so he can be baptized on Saturday! It’s amazing how happy I feel about Riley getting baptized. He wasn't sure a few days ago about being baptized on Saturday but yesterday he told us he wants to be baptized then! I don't even know how to explain the joy I felt when he told us...it’s just amazing :)

 Some bad news...we have transfers this week and Sister Funk is getting transferred. So I am staying here. I am so nervous, I don't feel like I know this area very well yet. Our district leader asked me yesterday if I was nervous and he said that's a good thing ha ha...I'm not sure why that's a good thing. It probably has to be with being humble, and realizing that I do need help every day.

Week 16 Fouth Month

Who knew pancakes could be so bad?

Hello everyone!

 How's it going? This week was pretty great...well for the most part. Our stake did mini missions for some of the priests and laurels, and so we got to host a girl named Rachel. It was a lot of fun and we really hope she had a good time. The worst part was definitely that a lady tried to Bible bash with us. We had met her a few days before and she invited us to come over, turns out she just needed a few days to get prepared with scriptures. We felt pretty bad that Rachel had to go through that, we just told her that she got introduced to every aspect of missionary work with that experience ha ha.

 Yesterday was kind of scary and crazy. So we had dinner at a members house and she made gluten free pancakes...keep in mind I am allergic to tree nuts and so the pancakes probably had nut flour in them. Well while I was eating my mouth started to itch. I didn't think much about this. Then after our spiritual thought I knew I was having an allergic reaction, I took some benadril and thought I'd be ok. We had forgotten something at home so we when home and my reaction got worse. I got a blessing and then after some thought the Perry's drove us to urgent care. By the time we got there I was bright red, had hives, and couldn't breath very well. I was admitted right away. They hooked me up to an IV and gave me some more benadril and some steroids because my face was all swollen. And I used an epiy pen for the first time ever. So I'm fine now, it just really scared me and Sister Funk too. 

 Besides the allergic reaction we had a pretty good week. I started reading Mosiah and I love reading King Benjamin's words. By the way...the other sisters in our district stole Oso from us, don't worry we're going to get him back ha ha. Well I hope you all have a great week! Keep on smiling :)

Elder Oso

Ola!

 

 So how was everyone's week? This week I learned how amazing our new mission president is. This will take a little explaining...you see there is a giant stuffed animal bear named Elder Oso that has been floating around this mission for about 4 years. Well for the last few weeks the elders in my district have been stealing Oso from each other. Sister Funk and I were feeling a little left out and last Monday we were hanging out with a bunch of other missionaries and someone accidently said where Oso was being hidden...the mission home. We had been trying to figure out how to get Oso for a while and so we called up President Ware, told him that we wanted to get Oso so we would feel more included in our district. President Ware responded- the mission home will be unlocked in 15 minutes, just walk right in...this conversation never happened. Ha ha, President and Sister Ware are amazing! So we still have Oso...we actually put a dress on him and now he is Sister Oso because we cant have an elder in our room. So we definitely feel included in our district now because everyone wants to get Oso back from us...its not going to happen :)

 We had zone conference this week and I learned a lot. The focus was on how to do a church tour, which was perfect because we are trying to get one of our investigators to take a tour. Its amazing how sometimes at training and meetings you learn exactly what you are needing to hear.

 

 So this week I had kind of an interesting experience. Our district went out to lunch at a Chinese place (I wasn't really excited about this because I don't really like eating out and I don't like having to spent money on eating out when we get free Subway once a week and could have gone there). So we had all ordered and a man walks to our table and sets down a gift card for $90! He paid for all of our lunches and we knew there would be money left over. The rest of the missionaries I was with, 5 elders, 3 sisters, started talking about how we would use the rest of the money, who would get in out of all the companionships or if we could get cash back and split it. I didn't think this was right. So I suggested that with the left over money we give it to someone else in the restaurant. Everyone just kind of looked at me then said that's a good idea. I just figured that if someone was willing to pay for our lunches we should do the same. Thank you for teaching me to be charitable.

 

I did find out this week that everyone who got here the same day as me, who were waiting for their visas are gone. Everyone has gotten their visa except me. I actually found this out last Monday too, Sister Funk had known for a few days but didn't tell me. So that was a little disappointing but I guess there is still some reason Heavenly Father needs me here.
